Born in Theresienfeld/Vienna (Austria), he served as commander of the Artillery Development Factory in the Vienna Arsenal in 1871. His invention for casting cannons from bronze received international attention in 1874. He is remembered most for being the first person to project visible moving images on a screen by improving on Plateau’s Phenakistiscope in about 1850. The use of stroboscopic photographs to produce the illusion of motion also led to the development of motion pictures.
Franz VON UCHATIUS died in 1881 in Vienna.
