THURMES Jean Emile
Jean Emile THURM was born as Johann THURMES in 1892 in Landscheid/Bastendorf. His father Joseph THURM was a Lehrer in Landscheid.
Joseph THURM later was Lehrer in Ermsdorf/Diekirch (around 1899), in Hellange/Frisange (around 1905) and in Lintgen (around 1925).
While his parents were living in Hellange, Jean Emile became an Elektriker and carried the professional title of Betriebsassistent.
In 1913 he was reported operating a “drahtlose Telegraphie Station” in Hellange.
In the mid-1910s he must have married Elfriede MEINIG (born in Mittweida) who died in Hellingen in 1919 at the age of 24. It would appear that, at the time, THURM was in the process of studying for an engineering degree at the University of Mittweida/Sachsen since he qualified as engineer, two years later, in 1921 (at the age of 29). He must have started his studies in Mittweida around 1917.
After his graduation he probably settled in Chemnitz/Sachsen from where he announced in March 1922 his engagement to Frieda Erna DIETZE whom he married in the same year.
Around 1927 Jean Emile THURM returned to Luxembourg and set up as independent engineer in Lintgen/Mersch where his parents lived at the time.
His father Joseph had left Hellange and taken on a teaching position in Lintgen.
Jean-Emile offered services for assembling and repairing radio equipment.
In association with August SCHNEIDER he founded in 1928 the company “Comptoir technique, Lintgen”:
Zweck der Gesellschaft ist Vertrieb eigener und fremder Patente, Projektierung und Bau elektrischer Anlagen etc.
The company, however, lasted only a few months before it was dissolved, but THURM retained the right to the company’s name.
In March 1932 THURM became the interim Gemeindesekretär in Lintgen and received the final appointment in July.
In 1936 he took on the representation of a French insurance company and in July 1937 he registered a company in his own name for “tous travaux d’électricité”.
In 1938, he applied for and obtained the position of Gemeindesekretär in Niederkerschen, a position which he presumably held during the Nazi occupation.
In 1948 THURM was sentenced to a 10 year prison sentence and loss of his Luxembourg citizenship for his role during the Nazi occupation.
Jean Emile THURM died in Belvaux in 1973.
