STEICHEN Max
Max STEICHEN was the son of Joseph STEICHEN conseiller à la Cour supérieure de justice and later président du Conseil d’Etat. His mother was Justine MONGENAST, daughter of Mathias MONGENAST, lawyer in Diekirch and later Directeur général des Finances (1882), membre du conseil d’Etat (1915) and président du Conseil d’Etat (1916).
Max STEICHEN was born in Luxembourg-city (Josef-Gasse) but grew up on the family home in Bel-Val (near Belvaux) where his father had built a villa in 1892. The family owned the ground which had a mineral water source named “Ernshof”. The water was later bottled and sold under the trademark “Bel-Val”.
Max STEICHEN studied at the Luxembourg Gymnasium where he passed his Reifeprüfung in 1918. He continued his studies in Köln in the field of civil engineering.
In 1919, as a university student, he became fondé de pouvoir for the newly founded company Emile Schauppel and Cy., Central Trade Company and Industrial Office, Luxembourg (commerce en vins, spiritueux et vêtements). The company was dissolved in the mid-1920s.
(Emile SCHAUPPEL was born in Luxembourg-city in 1891. In 1921 Max STEICHEN married Emile’s sister Lotty SCHAUPPEL in Köln. Father Thomas SCHAUPPEL was a tonnelier in Luxembourg-city.)
It was the start of STEICHEN’s career as industriel.
Around 1930 Max STEICHEN became director of the Bel-Val domain owned by the Steichen family. The domain was put up for sale by auction in 1934 and acquired by ARBED.
In 1935 STEICHEN took a small participation in the company ARTISANA:
La société a pour objet : La fabrication de montres et leur commerce, le commerce de métaux et de pierres précieux, d’articles de bijouterie et de joaillerie ainsi que toutes opérations industrielles, commerciales ou financières, mobilières ou immobilières pouvant se rattacher directement ou indirectement à l’objet social ou pouvant en faciliter l’extension ou le développement.
In 1948 STEICHEN applied for two patents based on inventions made by Lazar JEFTIC. The latter had earlier applied for corresponding patents in France. The patent applications, however, did not proceed to grant in France.
Max STEICHEN died in 1965 in Luxembourg-Eich.
