SAUR Georges

The origin of the SAUR family can be traced back to 1690 in the Luxembourg Moselle region (Schengen, Wintrange, Remich) up to Georges SAUR’s father Willibrord Hubert Eugen, born in Remich in 1840. The latter married in 1873 Marie Louise de Saint Hubert, in Luxembourg, and moved to Paris where his occupation was employé au chemin de fer de l’Est.
Georges SAUR was born in Paris on 19 March 1876.
He became Ingénieur des Arts et Manufactures, presumably around 1900.
His father died in 1892 in Paris and his mother died in 1902 in Luxembourg-city.
SAUR married Marie Laure KOCH in 1903, in Luxembourg-city. The couple probably settled in Esch sur Alzette.
In 1907 SAUR bought the Godchaux property on Boulevard Royal for installing there “un grand garage moderne”, and in 1908 he announced the opening of his “Grand Garage SAUR”. In the same year he obtained a contract from the Government to set up regular bus services for Diekirch-Hosingen, Ettelbruck-Feulen-Grosbous-Redingen and for Remich-Schengen.
In June 1914 SAUR’s exclusive Peugeot representation, dating from 1913, was cancelled and the fonds de commerce of the “Grand Garage Sauer” was taken over by Peugeot.
The SAUR-KOCH couple divorced in 1916 and Georges SAUR probably left Luxembourg for France.
In December 1918, at the end of WWI, SAUR returned to Luxembourg, from France.

Heimkehr. Am letzten Freitag traf, aus Frankreich kommend, Hr. Jobert, Direktor der Champagnerfabrik Mercier ein. Auch Hr. Georges Saur, der Gründer der Grand Garage, hat sich bei seinen Freunden eingestellt.

He did not stay long in Luxembourg. In 1919 SAUR filed a patent application in the United Kingdom indicating Paris as his place of residence.
In 1923 SAUR married Marie Lucie SALMON in Paris (15e arrondissement).
SAUR had two children from his first marriage with Marie Laure KOCH: Jean (1908 – 1949) and Elisabeth (1910 – 1976).
It is not known when and where he died.
