PALZER Leonard
The PALZER family originates from Oberweiler/Prüm. In 1870 the family moved to Buchet/Prüm. Leonard’s father Johann Baptist PALZER was a Bergmann. He was married to Elisabeth STUPPERTZ and had ten children, all born in Prussia. Leonard, born in 1876 in Buchet, was the youngest child.
Judging from the Census reports of Knaphoscheid/Eschweiler the family PALZER-STUPPERTZ came to Luxembourg between 1876 and 1880 to settle in Knaphoscheid.
In 1880 Johann Baptist PALZER’s occupation was Taglöhner and later he became an Ackerer.
Leonard PALZER grew up in Knaphoscheid and went through the following stages:
Schüler (1887), Ackerer (1895), a short stay in Düdelingen between 1897-1898, Plafonnier-Geselle in Brachtenbach (1901).
When his father Johann Baptist died in 1910, Leonard was still living in Knaphoscheid and was an Ackerer. His brother Joseph, who had been living in the family home in 1900, had left for Esch sur Alzette before 1906
Leonard’ mother had died in 1908 with the result that Leonard was left on his own on the Knaphoscheid farm.
He must have left Knaphoscheid for Esch sur Alzette around 1911 to join his brothers Joseph and Daniel.
In 1912, when Leonard PALZER made his first invention, he lived in Esch sur Alzette. His occupation is not known, although it is likely that he worked as Bergmann, like his brother Joseph, or as Schmelzarbeiter, like his brother Daniel.
In 1917 he was mentioned in the local press as Schriftführer of the “Invaliden Verband” and in 1919, as Machinist der Grubengesellschaft “Gelsenkirchen”.
There is no evidence that Leonard PALZER was married.
He died in Grindhausen/Clervaux in 1959 (home of the family PALZER-SCHROEDER, descendants of his brother Daniel).
