LEY Mathias

Mathias LEY was born in 1877 in Ahn (Wormeldange). His father Johann was a Winzer. Mathias LEY had ten siblings.
LEY studied agriculture and viticulture at the Ecole agricole d’Ettelbruck. He graduated in 1892 and was awarded a premier prix.
He became a viticulteur and a Weinhändler and settled in Grevenmacher where he became politically active in 1905. He was named échevin of the city of Grevenmacher on 10 September 1908.
In 1922 the local press mentioned his name, with the qualification of ancien échevin, and in 1925 LEY was a candidate at the parliamentary elections for the partie de droite. He held a seat in Parliament between 1926 and 1928.
LEY also took an active interest in the federation of Luxembourg wine merchants. In 1934 he was reported to be their president (Präsident des Weinhändlerverbandes). In this capacity he took part in the Brussels World Exhibition of 1935.
LEY died in on 30 May 1943 in Zell near Cochem.
His role during the German occupation of 1940 and following years, however, was still an issue after his death; the last report on LEY in the local press appeared in 1945 under the title Politische Prozesse:

Mathias LEY, Weinhändler, Grevenmacher (inzwischen verstorben), über­führt freiwillig der VdB und der NSDAP beigetreten zu sein, das Amt eines Kreis­beirates innegehabt und aus Gewinnsucht gehandelt zu haben, wurde zu 600 000 Franken Buße verurteilt.

LEY was buried in Differdange, the city in which his wife was born.
