KLATTE Otto

KLATTE was of German origin and came to work in the steel industry in Luxembourg, probably in the1870s. From the information provided in his patents, the following career can be retraced:

KLATTE is known in the metallurgic field for having developed a process and an apparatus for producing chains by laminating metal bars:

O. Klatte, directeur des “Walzwerk Germania” de Neuwied, a cherché à résoudre plus simplement le problème en substituant à la série des opérations précédemment exigées, un laminage des fers en croix au moyen d’un matériel convenablement disposé.
En raison de la section cruciforme du fer profilé, il est naturel que l’inventeur ait immédiatement songé à employer un laminoir à quatre cylindres disposés de façon à pratiquer à la fois sur les quatre ailettes les empreintes des maillons de la chaîne. Un estampage s’imposait ensuite pour l’enlèvement des bavures de cette ébauche; puis, venait le poinçonnage de la matière joignant deux anneaux consécutifs et la séparation à la presse des maillons qui avaient finalement besoin d’un moulage au laminoir pour passer de la forme carrée arrondie angles à la forme définitive.

Otto KLATTE and Constant STEFFEN, a Luxembourg engineer, were joint inventors of a patent obtained in Luxembourg in 1887. KLATTE, at the time, worked in the steelworks of Dudelange.
