HUGOT Léon
Léon HUGOT was born in 1878 in France, in a suburb of Paris. His father Théophile HUGOT was a marchand de vins.
His mother (Marie-Louise) Adrienne HIPPERT, born in Useldange, was the daughter of Nicolas HIPPERT, notaire in Useldange at the time. The latter was also a member of the Chambre des Députés from 1842 to1848 and 1854 to 1855.
Adrienne’s brother Eugène, following in his father’s footsteps, also became notaire in Useldange around 1864 but he died already in 1872.
Adrienne also lost her father in 1870. Around that time she must have left the family home in Useldange (her name no longer appears on the 1871 Census) and probably went to Paris where she met and married Théophile HUGOT in 1877.
Léon HUGOT was born in 1878 in the home of Adrienne’s sister Maria Christina who lived in Paris. She was married to Louis Achille POYET.
Léon HUGOT lost his mother Adrienne HIPPERT in 1888 when he was ten years old, and 4 years later he also lost his father Théophile HUGOT.
According the Useldange Census of 1890 Léon HUGOT settled in Useldange. He lived in the household PÉGARD-HIPPERT, with his uncle and aunt. The latter ran a hostel in Useldange. The Census also reveals that Léon was temporarily in Ausbildung in Carlsbourg (Belgium), presumably in a boarding school.
The 1895 Census located Léon again in Useldange. His occupation was recorded as étudiant. The Census also mentioned that Léon had resided in the household PÉGARD-HIPPERT since 1887. The reason given for his presence was maladie, presumably in reference to his mother’s illness who died in 1888.
In 1900 Léon HUGOT was still resident in Useldange, his occupation being Mechaniker. He declared that he had been back (from abroad) since mid-1899.
In 1904 he filed a trademark in Luxembourg (“L’Attert”) giving evidence that he was preparing his project for setting up a bicycle manufacturing plant in Useldange under the name of “L’ATTERT”.
HUGOT married Léonie Catherine LAMARQUE in 1908. She was the daughter of Eugène LAMARQUE, confiseur, Fournisseur de la Cour (Hof-Conditor).
The couple had two girls, born in 1910 and 1912.
In 1912 HUGOT’s first advertisement appeared in the Luxembourg press. Besides bicycles, it also mentioned that HUGOT had obtained a representation for the French car firm Clément Bayard.
He launched a publicity campaign in 1913 but he died soon after, in 1915, at the age of 36.
His estate was put up for auction in 1919.
