HERKENRATH Armand
Armand (Hermann) HERKENRATH was born in Dudelange in 1907. His father Mathias HERKENRATH’s occupation was Obermeister in the Dudelange steelworks. The latter was of German origin, but Armand’s mother Anne Marie HENGEL was born in Machtum.
Armand HERKENRATH obtained Luxembourg nationality in 1931 and joined the Luxembourg Douane. He held several positions at the country’s borders (Roder, Rodershauen, Wasserbillig, Esch sur Alzette)
At the beginning of WWII he abandoned Luxembourg for the south of France and joined the resistance movement against the Nazi occupant in Luxembourg.
Upon his return to Luxembourg in 1945 he acted as the president of the “Groupement indépendant des Maquisards luxembourgeois” and was appointed lay judge in the post-war “Spezialgericht” dealing with Nazi collaborators.
He reintegrated the Douane in its central office in Luxembourg-city.
Armand HERKENRATH died in Arles (Provence) in 1993.
