HAMILIUS Eugène

Eugène Nicolas HAMILIUS was born in Dudelange in 1891. His father was a Wirth.
He studied electrical engineering and, in 1917, when he married Marcelle DONDELINGER, daughter of a hôtelier in Ettelbruck, he was actually residing in Ettelbruck.
He became a member of the Association Luxembourgeoise des Ingénieurs et Industriels. According to their records HAMILIUS held a bureau technique in Ettelbruck from 1920 to 1925.
In 1926 he moved his bureau technique to Luxembourg-city (route d’Esch, rue de Longwy and later to rue du X Septembre).
HAMILIUS’ professional career has been summarised as follows:

Jeune homme, il avait fait ses premiers pas dans la vie industrielle aux usines sidérurgiques du pays, dans les services électriques, domaine dans lequel il devait ultérieurement donner toute la mesure de son esprit créateur et inventif et auquel il est resté attaché toute sa vie.
Après huit ans passés à l’AEG il s’établit, au lendemain de la première guerre mondiale, pour son propre compte, pour s’occuper de la fabrication de matériel d’équipement électrique pour ponts roulants, grues et autres appareils de levage, de manutention et de transport des usines métallurgiques, minières, charbonnages, ports maritimes et fluviaux, tramways et chemins de fer. Ses recherches dans cet important champ d’activité lui avaient valu des brevets dans son propre pays, en Allemagne, en Belgique, en France, en Grande-Bretagne et en Italie. Pour pouvoir servir plus utilement et rapidement sa clientèle française toujours croissante, il avait installé également un atelier de fabrication de l’appareillage « Faraco » à Thionville.

In 1930 Eugène HAMILIUS and Karl SPIECKERMANN founded the company “Faraco, Hamilius et Cie” s.e.n.c.

Zweck der Gesellschaft ist die Fabrikation von Stromschienen “Patent Spieckermann” und elektrischen Apparaten wie Isolatoren, Stromabnehmern und überhaupt alle Apparate welche für elektrische Stromübertragung in Frage kommen, und welche alle in Frankreich zum Patent angemeldet werden.

Karl SPIECKERMANN owned a number of patents in Germany but not in France. He presumably wished to have HAMILIUS help him enter the French market.
The FARACO association, however, was already dissolved and liquidated in 1934 by common agreement of the partners. During the period 1930 to 1934 HAMILIUS had obtained two Luxembourg patents in his own name.
HAMILIUS had retained the right to the name “FARACO” and in September 1934 registered a new Company “FARACO” under his own name for “fabrication et commerce d’articles électriques”.
In 1954 he converted his company into a société anonyme.
HAMILIUS died 4 years later in Mamer (Neumühle), in 1958.
