HAMES Albert

Albert HAMES was born in 1898 in Boulaide, son of a Handelsmann (Hotelier).
He studied at the Industrie- und Handelsschule in Luxembourg-city and, in 1923, he qualified as engineer (Allgemeiner Maschinenbau) at the Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg.

Après un court stage à l’usine d’Arbed-Esch il passa au service des machines d’Arbed-Burbach et, une année plus tard, au service électro-mécanique d’Arbed-Dommeldange. C’est le 24 octobre 1927 qu’il commença aux minières de l’Arbed à Esch pour y passer 18 années révolues, comme assistant de feu Auguste Giver.
Nommé Chef de fabrication au service de l’exploi­tation des forêts de l’Arbed, le 1er mai 1945, il fut muté, dix ans plus tard, à l’Administration Centrale. C’est de cette époque que date son étude sur les critères des qualités physiques et mécaniques du bois des mines, publiée dans notre Revue en 1956.
Le 31 décembre 1958, il prit sa retraite pour créer la Société de Modernisations Industrielles A.H. et Cie, dont il était l’Administrateur délégué.

He was married to Valérie DAUPHIN, born in 1896 in Merl (Hollerich).
In the early 1940s he worked for the mining company HOEHL where he developed during the years 1942 to 1944 a new type of “Buggi” (tip wagon).
In 1946 he presented his wagon and published a booklet under the title of: Le Wagonnet à minerai, dit “Buggi” (see Addendum).
After retiring from ARBED, he created in 1959 his own company by the name of “Hames Albert et Cie (Société de Modernisation Industrielle), s.à r.l.”
The company acquired a patent filed in France by Valentin ARNOULD of Hussigny (FR) and obtained corresponding patents in Germany and Luxembourg.
HAMES resided in Esch sur Alzette (27 rue Emile Mayrisch) and died there in 1974.
