DOLD Carl

Carl DOLD was born in 1848 in Luxembourg-city (34 rue Beaumont). His father Salomon was an Uhrmacher, born in 1783; he was thus aged 55 at Carl’s birth.
Salomon ran an Uhrmacher’s business in Luxembourg-city, together with his brother Anton (b. 1792). Salomon died in 1852 and Anton in 1858.
Following in the footsteps of his father and his uncle, Carl trained to become an Uhrmacher and established his first business address in 8 rue Beaumont.
In 1871, at the age of 23, he signed a contract with the commune of Luxembourg for taking over the responsibility of winding up the city’s public clocks.
In August 1874 DOLD married Catharina NEUENS, the daughter of a Hüttendirector in Differdange, and in September he took over the shop of Uhrmacher Louis J. SCHLIM situated in 4 rue de la Porte Neuve.
He signed as Uhrmacher-Mechaniker and in 1879, when he moved his shop to 16 rue des Capucins, he called himself horloger-électricien. In 1880 he moved his shop to 53 Grand-rue. His wife used the premises in 16 rue des Capucins for establishing a grocery shop.
Mid-1882 DOLD became general representative for the Bell-Blake telephone system in Luxembourg and Elsass-Lothringen.
In 1886 DOLD came back with his business to the rue des Capucins as Uhrmacher, Optiker & Elektriker.
The press reported in 1893 about two inventions made by DOLD:

Luxembourg, 15 avril [1893]. – M. Charles Dold opticien et électricien, inventeur de la pendule mystérieuse, vient de faire une nouvelle invention. Cette fois-ci c’est un appareil automatique destiné à signaler l’incendie. L’appareil ressemble à une pendule; une aiguille, très sensible à la chaleur, tourne à mesure que celle-ci augmente et, arrivé à un certain degré, elle met une sonnerie en mouvement. On en a fait l’essai dans la salle des archives du palais de justice, au musée archéologique au Pfaffenthal et dans la salle des archives de l’administration des postes et télégraphes.

DOLD moved yet again his business address in 1894, this time to 7 rue de l’Arsenal. He continuously widened his field of activities. DOLD’s death date is not known, but must be later than 1921.
