BEINS Hendrik
Dr med. Hendrik BEINS was born in 1835 in Groningen (NL).
A Dutch encyclopaedia of 1884 published the following biography:
Beins (Hendrik), a distinguished Dutch scientist, born in 1835, studied medicine in Groningen, continued his studies in Berlin and Paris in 1858 and 1859, and then established himself as a physician in Groningen. In 1863, he published a brochure on muscle function and nutrition. Assisted by his brother Jan Frederik Beins, a teacher of mathematics and physics at the gymnasium in Assen, he searched for a motive force that could replace steam and finally discovered that double sodium carbonate, heated in closed vessels, releases a portion of the carbon dioxide, allowing any pressure to be applied to it. Based on this invention, for which he applied for a patent in several countries, the firm Beins, Hoen, and Corver was founded in Groningen, which supplies a simple apparatus for preparing liquid carbon dioxide. Jan Frederik Beins also devised a device for dispensing mineral water into so-called ball bottles, which are metal-free and widely used. H. Beins is still working on the plan to use compressed carbon dioxide as a motive force.
Hendrik BEINS died in Groningen in 1888.
