BAUER Mathias

(1863 - 1913)
Strassen

Mathias BAUER’s father Joseph BAUER (1817-1865) was born in Germany in 1817. The latter was a Buchbinder and, according to the places of residence recorded in the Birth Register of the children of his first marriage, he resided in Germany.
When his first wife died in 1857 he became resident in Liège.
In 1858, at the age of 41, he married Elisabeth BECKER (1831-1901) of Strassen. The couple settled in Strassen where Joseph’s occupation was still Buchbinder.
Mathias BAUER was born in 1863 in Strassen and his father died shortly afterwards in 1865.
In 1891 when he married Eugénie LEVY (b. 1867) his occupation was Kalkbrenner. Eugénie was the daughter of a Handelsmann in Strassen.
BAUER launched in 1896 an extensive advertising campaign for his business which he presented as “Kalk- und Thomasschlaken-Walzwerk und Tuffsteinziegelfabrik”.
He took part in local politics and became échevin of Strassen.
BAUER died in 1913, but the business was carried on for a while by his wife and later by his son-in-law Michel PERRIN.
