Michel ALCAN was born in 1810 in Donnelay, in the French Département de la Moselle, son of a farmer with little means. While working in Nancy as a book binder at night, he managed to study at the Ecole Centrale in Paris to become ingénieur-mécanicien in 1834.
In 1852 he became professor at the Conservatoire des arts et métiers in Paris. His main field of interest was the textile industry.
He owned 20 French patents which he obtained between the years 1839 and 1866.
Michel ALCAN died in 1877 in Paris.
